Abstract

This study is to describe the characteristics of cleft palate patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency and evaluate speech improvement and healing after pharyngoplasty surgery. The sample included 15 cleft palate patients operated at My Thien Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology and Plastic Surgery from December 2021 to March 2022. Results: 100% of patients before surgery had nasal air emission and hypernasality, in which 73.7% had severe speech disorder; 26.3% had moderate disorders. After 3 months of surgery, only 46.67% have mild speech disorder; 53.33% have average disorder. Speech scores decreased by 39.4% after 1 month, and after 3 months decreased by 62.6%. After surgery, all cases achieved good healing. Thus, nasal air emission and hypernasality are two main features in cleft palate patients with velopharyngeal insufficiency. Pharyngoplasty surgery significantly improves the patient's speech, reducing nasal voice and reducing air through the nose when speaking, with short surgery time and few postoperative complications.
