Abstract

Neonatal appendicitis is an extraordinarily rare disease with an incidence rate between 0.04% - 0.2%. It tends to occur in premature infants, with increased perforation rate and rapid progression to peritonitis. This disease is often diagnosed late and has a high mortality rate of 23% due lack of specific signs and low index of suspicion. Almost all cases were found during surgery suspected as other diagnoses. We report the first case of perforated acute appendicitis in an 8-day-old preterm baby born at 33 weeks of gestation at the National Children's Hospital.
