Dehydration and nutritional status among elderly inpatients at Hanoi Medical University Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the nutritional status, the prevalence of dehydration and to investigate related factors among 137 elderly inpatients at Hanoi Medical University Hospital, from January 2024 to September 2024. We obtained the following results: the proportion of malnutrition assessing by MNA-LF was 17,5%. The prevalene ofdehydration when assessed by plasma osmolality and BUN/Cre index was 24.1% and 47.5%, respectively. The average daily water intake was 1361.7 ml/day and the average daily water per weight was 25.5 ml/kg/day. Factors such as old age, female gender, and poor nutritional status (MNA-LF) were associated with an increased risk of dehydration. The relatively high rates of malnutrition and dehydration among elderly inpatients emphasize the need for thorough nutritional assessments and timely detection of dehydration to enhance treatment outcomes and improve the quality of life for these patients.
