Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the analgesic effects and functional recovery of a combined therapy of electroacupuncture and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei topical powder application in patients with knee osteoarthritis. This was a controlled interventional study in 68 patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis according to the the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria, at Vinh Phuc Traditional Medicine Hospitalfrom July 2023 to July 2024. The treatment group received electroacupuncture combined with Radix et Rhizoma Rhei topical powder application, while the control group received electroacupuncture alone. Results showed that after treatment the average Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score in the treatment group was significantly lower than the control group (2.62 ± 0.85 and 3.68 ± 0.48) The average Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score was also lower in the treatment group compared to the control group (23.94 ± 3.94 and 31.29 ± 6.04). Furthermore, the range of motion in the knee joint was more significant in the treatment group (131.18 ± 4.45 and 120.15 ± 3.14), with p < 0.05. The combined method of electroacupuncture and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei topical powder in patients with knee osteoarthritis contributed a significant effect on pain reduction and improvement in joint mobility and range of motion, showing a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) compared to treatment with electroacupuncture alone.
