Abstract

This study described the origin, dimensions, course, accompanying veins, and branching patterns of the lumbar arteries (LAs) in formalin-embalmed adult Vietnamese cadavers. A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 45 cadavers (90 bilateral lumbar regions), including 28 males and 17 females, with a mean age of 67.8 years old. The mean arterial diameter ranged from 2.01 to 2.34mm at levels L1-L4, whereas the L5 artery was smaller. The mean length of LAs from L1-L4, measured from the origin to the medial border of the psoas major muscle, ranged from 29.24 to 31.75mm, with a significant asymmetry at L4 (left < right). The course of L1-L3 arteries was relatively constant, while L4-L5 tended to run nearly parallel to the transverse axis of the vertebral body. The accompanying lumbar veins were larger than the corresponding arteries but showed no linear correlation. The number of branches commonly observed was three at L1-L2, four to five at L3-L4, and few or absent at L5. These findings indicate that the lumbar arteries in Vietnamese adults exhibit consistent morphology at upper levels but marked variability at lower levels, with important implications for spinal and endovascular surgery.
