Insomnia and related factors among patients after maxillofacial surgery at the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology Hanoi in 2024

Abstract
This study aimed to describe the prevalence of insomnia and associated factors among patients after maxillofacial surgery. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 140 patients after maxillofacial surgery at the National Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology, Hanoi. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) was used to assess the level of insomnia. Mild insomnia was found in 48,6% of patients, and moderate insomnia in 9.3%. Among those, 46.4% reported difficulty falling asleep, 45% had trouble maintaining sleep, and 38.6% woke up too early at moderate and severe level. Additionally, 42.1% reported that insomnia moderately or severely affected their quality of life. Patients who used to have surgery, experienced insomnia before surgery, or had difficulty eating postoperatively were more likely to have insomnia after surgery (p < 0.05). To improve postoperative quality of life and enhance recovery, it is important to focus on history of surgery of patients, target at the quality of sleep before surgery and eating ability of patients after surgery.
