Anesthesia for liposuction surgery: Identification of risks and employment of safety strategies
Main Article Content
Abstract
Liposuction is currently the most common cosmetic procedure, yet its potential risks have not been fully recognized. This review analyzes the risks that anesthesiologists should pay attention to in patients undergoing liposuction, particularly in large-volume procedures or when combined with other interventions. The literature search utilized key terms including “liposuction,” “tumescent anesthesia,” “liposuction complications,” and “anesthesia risk” from reputable medical databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, as well as professional society guidelines. We found that liposuction is a high-risk surgery, characterized by specific technical features such as the use of high doses of lidocaine and epinephrine in tumescent solutions, alterations in intravascular and extravascular fluid volumes, and the potential for delayed fat embolism or deep vein thrombosis. Ensuring patient safety requires a thorough understanding of the procedure, its associated risks, and close multidisciplinary collaboration.
