Overview of early outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for primary spontaneous pneumothorax at Hanoi Medical University Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
The purpose of this result is to evaluate the outcomes of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for the treatment of primary spontaneous pneumothorax at Hanoi Medical University Hospital in 2024 and to compare the effectiveness of different surgical techniques. This was a retrospective descriptive study of 30 patients who underwent surgery between January and December 2024. A total of 30 patients were included, of whom 7 were female, with a mean age of 33.9 ± 5.4 years (range 16 - 65). Chest CT scan detected pulmonary bullae in 23/30 patients (76.7%). Surgical techniques consisted of simple bullectomy in 14 patients (46.7%), bullectomy combined with pleural abrasion and betadine pleurodesis in 14 patients (46.7%), and bullectomy with talc pleurodesis in 2 patients (6.6%). The mean operative time was 47 minutes, and the mean postoperative chest tube duration was 5.44 days (range 2 - 11). Histopathology confirmed bullae or ruptured bullae in 100% of cases. At > 6-month follow-up, ipsilateral recurrence occurred in 2 patients (6.6%), contralateral pneumothorax in 1 patient, intercostal neuralgia in 6 patients, and no cases of dyspnea or chest discomfort were reported. VATS bullectomy is a safe and effective surgical approach for the management of primary spontaneous pneumothorax.
