Perceived social support and related factors among people living with HIV/AIDS in Ho Chi Minh City

Abstract
People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH), beside clinical challenges, also face many social issues. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of perceived social support among PLWH on antiretroviral treatment (ART) at District 10’s Medical Centre, Ho Chi Minh City and related factors. Perceived social support was measured with the Multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS). The mean score for perceived social support was 5.14 ± 1.36. The findings showed that higher educational status, being married, higher income, and HIV disclosure status were significantly correlated to higher perceived social support. Therefore, health management programmes for PLWH should place a larger emphasis on socioeconomic aspects in order to increase treatment efficacy and participants’ quality of life.
