Abstract

Sleep disorder is common but often overlooked problems in the diagnosis and management of childhood epilepsy. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 98 children aged 4 - 12 years diagnosed and treated for epilepsy at Saint Paul Hospital from July 2024 to June 2025, aiming to determine the prevalence, characteristics, and associated factors of sleep disorder using the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Results showed that 60.2% of epileptic children had sleep disorder (CSHQ ≥ 41), with bedtime resistance (56.1%) and sleep onset delay (55.1%) being the most common manifestations. Sleep disorder was significantly associated with age at seizure onset ≤ 3 years, developmental delay, neurodevelopmental disorders, use of ≥ 2 antiepileptic drugs, abnormal electroencephalography (EEG) findings, and poor treatment response. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified abnormal EEG and drug-resistant epilepsyas independent factors associated with sleep disorder.
