Clinical characteristics, electroencephalography and brain magnetic resonance imaging in children with drug-resistant focal epilepsy at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study describes the clinical characteristics, electroencephalographic (EEG) features, and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of 123 children with drug-resistant focal epilepsy at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital from July 2024 to June 2025. The results showed that most children had seizure onset before 3 years of age, experienced ≥ 1 seizure per day, and exhibited impaired consciousness during seizures. EEG abnormalities were detected in 90.2% of cases, predominantly showing epileptiform discharges in the frontal and temporal lobes. MRI abnormalities were observed in 77.2% of patients, with focal cortical dysplasia being the most common finding. Factors significantly associated with abnormal MRI findings included: epilepsy onset age ≤ 3 years, impaired learning ability, and seizure frequency ≥ 1 seizure/day.
