Anti-gastroesophageal reflux effects of Da khoi cot formulation in an experimental model

Abstract
Da Khoi Cot formulation consists of Ardisiae sylvestris Pitard, Radix Paeoniae lactiflorae, Oledenlandia capitellata Kuntze, Amomum aromaticum Roxb., Fructus Aurantii immaturus and Sepiae endoconcha. It has the effects of promoting qi circulation, relieving pain, and regulating gastric secretions; it is indicated for epigastric pain, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Da Khoi Cot in an experimental model of esophageal injury induced by gastric reflux in Wistar rats using a surgical method combined with indomethacin administration. The rats were treated with esomeprazole or Da Khoi Cot (equivalent to 24 mL/kg/day and 48 mL/kg/day) for 7 days. The results showed that Da Khoi Cot reduced gastric juice volume, decreased the macroscopic esophageal injury scores, markedly reduced the area of esophageal lesions, with inhibition percentages of 86.69% and 88.63%, respectively and also mitigated microscopic esophageal damage. There was no statistically significant difference between the two studied doses. The esophageal lesion area in the group treated with Da Khoi Cot was significantly reduced compared with the esomeprazole-treated group. In summary, Da Khoi Cot demonstrated protective effects against esophageal injury in an experimental reflux model.
