Abstract

Osteoporosis treatment currently focuses mainly on improving bone mineral density, whereas sarcopenia and osteosarcopenia are increasingly recognized as factors that raise the risk of falls, fractures, and functional decline in patients with osteoporosis. We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study on 149 patients with primary osteoporosis at Hanoi Medical University Hospital from February to October 2025. Patients were diagnosed with sarcopenia based on AWGS 2019 criteria. The results showed that the prevalence of sarcopenia among patients with osteoporosis was 32.9%, and severe sarcopenia accounted for 12.8%. Sarcopenia was more frequent in patients aged 75 years or older, a BMI < 23 kg/m² and a history of corticosteroid use; this group also had significantly lower T-scores at the femoral neck and lumbar spine (L1–L4). Multivariate logistic regression identified male gender, age ≥ 75 years old, BMI < 23 kg/m² and corticosteroid use as independent factors associated with sarcopenia.
