Factors associated with length of hospital stay in patients with generalized anxiety disorder
Main Article Content
Abstract
Generalized anxiety disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by excessive, persistent, difficult-to-control worry and accompanied by a wide range of somatic symptoms. In clinical practice, patients frequently present with comorbid physical illnesses, which may adversely affect the course of inpatient treatment. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 77 inpatients with generalized anxiety disorder at the National Institute of Mental Health from December 2024 to July 2025; we investigated the association between comorbid medical conditions and length of hospital stay. The findings showed that nearly half of the patients required hospitalization for at least 14 days. Patients with comorbid gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal disorders were at greater risk of prolonged hospitalization. These results suggest that a multidisciplinary treatment approach for patients with generalized anxiety disorder and coexisting physical illnesses may help shorten the duration of hospitalization, reduce healthcare costs, and mitigate unfavorable risk factors.
