Primary outcome after concurrent chemoradiotherapy in upper third esophageal squamous cell carcinoma at Vietnam National Cancer hospital

Abstract
A retrospective, descriptive study was conducted on 56 patients diagnosed with upper third esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and supraclavicular lymph node metastasis to evaluate primary outcomes after receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy with radical radiation dose at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital from January 2022 to December 2024. All patients were male, and the average age was 59.0 years old; most patients had dysphagia grade 2 or higher; most were in locally advanced tumors (tumor T3-T4, lymph node N2-3, tumor size ≥ 5.3 cm). Supraclavicular lymph node metastases were mainly present in group IV and on the right side. The median radiotherapy dose was 61.6 Gy, and the main chemotherapy regimens were mFOLFOX6 and CF. Treatment response (complete and partial) rate according to RECIST 1.1 was 59.0%; however, the rate of progression disease was high (21.4%). In univariate and multivariate logistic models, tumor length (cutoff threshold of 5.3 cm) and dysphagia were associated with treatment response (p < 0.05).
