Evaluation of the effects of cigarette smoking on sperm quality and the risk of infertility in men presenting at Hanoi Medical University hospital

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoking on sperm quality and the risk of infertility in men presenting at Hanoi Medical University Hospital. A cross-sectional descriptive study using convenience sampling was conducted on 319 men presenting for consultation at Hanoi Medical University Hospital from June 2023 to June 2024, who were classified into smoking and non-smoking groups for comparison of semen analysis parameters. The proportion of motile sperm was significantly lower in the smoking group than in the non-smoking group (42.51% vs. 46.54%; p = 0.03). Heavy smokers showed marked reductions in both sperm motility and normal morphology rates. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that heavy smokers had a 5.2-fold higher risk of infertility compared with non-smokers (95% CI: 1.22 – 22.05; p = 0.02). Cigarette smoking, particularly heavy smoking, has a negative impact on sperm motility and is an independent risk factor that significantly increases the risk of infertility in Vietnamese men.
