Characteristics of sleep disorders in adolescent patients treated at the national institute of Mental health - Bach Mai hospital

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the characteristics of sleep disorders among adolescent patients treated at the National Institute of Mental Health – Bach Mai Hospital during 2025 – 2026. A descriptive study was conducted among 256 patients aged 10 – 19 years old treated at the National Institute of Mental Health, Bach Mai Hospital, from July 2025 to May 2026. The mean age of the study participants was 15.97 ± 2.21 years old, and was predominantly females at 64.1%. The prevalence of sleep disorders according to DSM-5 criteria was 56.2%. Insomnia was the most common at 66.7%, followed by nightmare disorder at 37.5%, hypersomnolence disorder at 13.2%, and circadian rhythm sleep–wake disorder at 11.8%. The most frequent pre-sleep symptoms were racing thoughts 68.8% and fatigue 50.7%. The predominant daytime manifestations were sleepiness 69.4%, fatigue 61.1%, and impaired attention and concentration 48.6%. In summary, sleep disorders were common in the study population, with insomnia and nightmare disorder being the two prominent disorders.
