Abstract

This retrospective, descriptive study evaluated 67 patients with advanced or metastatic platinum-resistant esophageal cancer treated with paclitaxel. The study aimed to describe baseline clinical characteristics and evaluate treatment outcomes. In the study cohort, 32.8% of patients presented with metastatic disease at initial diagnosis, while 67.2% developed metastasis after curative-intent treatment. The objective response rate was 10.4%, the stable disease rate was 40.3%, and the disease control rate was 50.7%. The median progression-free survival (mPFS) was 3,1 months, and the median overall survival (mOS) was 6.0 months. Subgroup analysis revealed that the relative dose intensity of paclitaxel significantly influenced mPFS (p = 0.006). Toxicity was predominantly mild to moderate (grade 1–2), with anemia being the most common adverse event (35.8%). No grade 4 toxicities or treatment-related deaths were observed. Paclitaxel demonstrated meaningful clinical benefit with acceptable tolerability. Therefore, this regimen represents a feasible treatment option for patients with platinum-resistant advanced or metastatic esophageal cancer in the current clinical setting in Vietnam.
