Pre- and postoperative nutritional status of patients with colorectal cancer at Viet Duc University hospital, 2025-2026

Abstract
A longitudinal descriptive study was conducted among 120 patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery at Viet Duc University Hospital from 2025 to 2026 to assess their nutritional status before and after surgery. The results showed that, based on body mass index (BMI), the prevalence of chronic energy deficiency before and after surgery was 15.8% and 22.5%, respectively. According to the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA), the prevalence of malnutrition or risk of malnutrition was 64.1% preoperatively and increased to 88.4% postoperatively; notably, the proportion of severe malnutrition, classified as PG-SGA category C, rose from 23.3% to 26.7% (p < 0.001). Seven days after surgery, 91.7% of patients experienced weight loss compared with their preoperative status. Mean body weight decreased significantly from 57.1 ± 10.7 kg to 55.4 ± 10.5 kg (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Malnutrition is common among patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery and tends to become more severe in the early postoperative period.
