Rối loạn phổ tự kỷ là rối loạn phát triển phức tạp, làm cho trẻ khiếm khuyết kỹ năng giao tiếp đặc biệt là trẻ ở mức độ 3 theo tiêu chuẩn DMS-5. Đánh giá đặc điểm giao tiếp chức năng nhóm trẻ rối loạn phổ tự kỷ hết sức quan trọng để xây dựng mục tiêu và kế hoạch can thiệp cho trẻ. Nghiên cứu đã sử dụng công cụ ma trận giao tiếp phiên bản tiếng Việt trực tuyến trên website của nhà cung cấp để đánh giá 50 trẻ rối loạn phổ tự kỷ mức độ 3 từ 24 - 72 tháng, ghi nhận cấp độ và lý do giao tiếp ở trẻ. Qua đó, 86% trẻ ở cấp độ giao tiếp 3 và 4, là sử dụng hành vi giao tiếp không theo qui ước hoặc theo qui ước. Ở mỗi cấp độ giao tiếp, trẻ gặp nhiều khó khăn để thể hiện lý do giao tiếp “yêu cầu”, nhưng khi đạt được mức này trẻ có thể thực hiện lý do giao tiếp “xã hội” và “thông tin” dễ dàng hơn.
