Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disorder that can lead to impaired communication skills in children, especially children at level 3 ASD according to DSM-5 criteria. Assessment of communication function in children with ASD is very important in formulating goals and intervention plans. This study used the communication matrix tool (online Vietnamese version) to evaluate the communication level and identify reasons to commucate in 50 children with grade 3 ASD aged 24 - 72 months . Most children (86%) were at communication levels 3 and 4 and showed pre-intentional behavior or intentional behaviour. At each communication level, children had difficulty expressing “obtain” communication reasons, but once they reached this level, they could make “social” and “information” reasons with some ease.
