Main Article Content
Abstract
To describe the clinical and subclinical characteristics of children with parasitic liver abscesses, we conducted a retrospective descriptive study on pediatric patients treated at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital from January 2018 to July 2022. The results showed a predominance of male patients (55.4%), with the majority living in rural (59.2%) and mountainous areas (26.5%). Common symptoms included hepatic pain (75.5%), hepatomegaly (63.3%), and persistent high fever (36.7%), while jaundice was rare (2.0%). The mean white blood cell count was 15.8 ± 7.4 G/L, with no case of leukopenia. Elevated GOT and GPT levels above 40 mmol/L were found in 36.7% and 28.6% of cases, respectively; a reduced prothrombin ratio below 60% was observed in 4.1%. Abdominal CT and MRI revealed single liver lesions in 44.9% of patients and multiple lesions in 55.1%. Parasitic liver abscesses were commonly seen in children over 6 months of age. Clinical symptoms were non-specific, and liver function abnormalities were uncommon.
