18. Screening the prevalence of palliative care needs among older people with chronic heart failure

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to screen the prevalence of palliative care needsin older patients with chronic heart failure. This is a cross-sectional study of 314 elderlies with chronic heart failure aged 60 and over treated at National Geriatric Hospital. Results showed that the average age of subjects was 72.6 ± 9.4 years old, the prevalence of palliative care needs in older patients with chronic heart failure was 64.3% by the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS). There was a statistically significant relationship between the palliative care needs and NYHA classification (p=0.03). Besides of classic symptoms like dypsnea, edema, patients hospitalized for heart failure also experienced anxiety and depression. As such, it is necessary to screen for the prevalence of palliative care needs in elderly with chronic heart failure to develop a comprehensive treatment and interventions plan.
