Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis and metabolic syndrome are a worldwide medical burden, especially due to the problem of obesity and rapidly aging populations. The objective of the study was to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and its components with the severity of knee osteoarthritis according to radiographic stage in people over 40 years of age. This is a cross-sectional study of 430 volunteers older than 40 years old participating in Vietnam Osteoporosis Study at Ton Duc Thang University from January 2022 to June 2022. We found that metabolic syndrome resulted in positive association with late X-ray stage 3.26 times (95%CI: 2.11 - 5.04, p < 0.001), after adjusting for confounding factors, the relationship remained with adjusted OR = 1.78 (95%CI: 1.09 - 2.90, p = 0.020). In addition, increased waist circumference, hypertension and hyperglycemia was positively associated with late radiographic stage with an OR of 2.89; 2.59 and 2.65, respectively.
