Abstract

Extraocular muscle is the most commonly involved structure in patients with Graves’ ophthalmopathy. Injury to the extraocular muscle leads to many clinical disorders, of which the most serious are double vision and restrictive extraocular myopathy. These disorders greatly affect visual function, daily life and work. This cross-sectional study described the characteristics of extraocular muscle involvement in 40 patients with Graves’ ophthalmopathy at Vietnam National Eye Hospital. The majority (70%) of the patients had symptoms of double vision, with more than half (55%) being vertical double vision. Restrictive extraocular myopathy were also present, with upward (75%) and upward-outward (93.75%) directions being the most common, and inward direction being the least common. Orbital computed tomography showed that the rates of enlargement of the inferior rectus muscle, medial rectus muscle, superior rectus muscle and lateral rectus muscle were 72.22%, 62.96%, 57.41% and 11.11%, respectively.
