23. Self-assessment of clinical competence among nursing students and its associated factors

Abstract

Nursing students are the future nursing workforce. Therefore, assessment of clinical competency - a core value of the nursing profession - among nursing students is important to improve the quality of nursing education and enhance nursing profession. A cross-sectional descriptive design is conducted on 110 third- and fourth-year nursing students at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Results: nursing students have high scores of clinical competency with 42.7% students are at good level and 41.8% of them are at moderate (mean score 1.2 ± 0.4/2). Fourth-year students significantly have higher scores of clinical competency compared with third-year students. Competence in applying knowledge in providing safe care for patients was the topic with the highest mean score. Meanwhile, training and support to enhance students’ competence in responding to emergency cases and health education are recommended.
