Abstract

We conducted this study to investigate the multi-pathological condition and related factors in elderly patients with first-time ischemic stroke. This is a cross-sectional descriptive study on 197 elderly inpatients with first-time ischemic stroke, treated at Thanh Nhan Hospital and National Geriatric Hospital, from January to July 2023. The results showed that the rate of multiple diseases was 69%, hypertension was the most common comorbiditiy (79.1%). High BMI (OR = 2.21; 95%CI: 1.13 - 4.35), high NIHSS score on admission (OR = 1.99; 95%CI: 1.07 - 3.71), cognitive impairment (OR = 2; 95%CI: 0.27 - 0.93), using multiple drug (OR = 25; 95%CI: 3.35 - 186.65) were associated with an increased prevalence of multiple diseases in elderly patients with ischemic stroke. In summary, the study showed that multimorbidity was a common health problem in elderly ischemic stroke. It was associated with high BMI, high NIHSS score on admission, cognitive impairment and using multiple drugs.
