Abstract

Dyslipidemia due to unhealthy lifestyles and eating habits is increasing worldwide. In addition to the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, recent evidence suggests that dyslipidemia also affects male fertility. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dyslipidemia, semen quality, and related factors of men who visited the Department of Andrology and Sex Medicine, Hanoi Medical University Hospital during the period. 2020 - 2022. The results showed that the average age of the research group was 30.4 ± 7.2 years old, 24.7% of the subjects were overweight and 18.0% of the men were obese. 62.5% of subjects had dyslipidemia; the most common was elevated triglycerides (42.2%). The group without blood dyslipidemia had a significantly larger semen volume than those with isolated hypertriglyceridemia, isolated hypercholesterolemia, and mixed hypertriglyceridemia (p < 0.05). The progressive motility in the non-dyslipidemia group was also significantly greater than in the mixed hypertriglyceridemia group (p = 0.015). In addition, on the multivariable linear regression model, BMI was negatively related to sperm volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm progressive motility. In summary, dyslipidemia has an impact on semen parameters.
