Abstract

Testicles play an important role in male sexual potency and testicular volume appears to be a predictor of testicular function. We conducted a study on 16,825 males who visited for consultation at the Department of Andrology and Sexual Medicine - Hanoi Medical University Hospital to evaluate the relationship between testicular volume and function. The mean right testicular volume was 13.96 ± 3.98ml, and the mean left testicular volume was 13.38 ± 3.8. The mean age of the subjects was 28.86 ± 6.6, and 29.63% of the subjects were obese. Male with normal testicular volume group had significantly higher parameters reflecting testicular function than the unilateral and bilateral hypovolemic groups. The linear regression model showed that the spermatogenesis and testosterone function of the testes were positively correlated with the volume and inversely with the concentration of LH and FSH. In summary, testicular function is closely related to its volume and is regulated by the hypothalamic - pituitary - gonadal axis. Age and obesity are risk factors for impaired testicular function.
