Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of acupoint catgut-embedding therapy for supportive treatment of allergic rhinitis categorized in the Wind-heat pattern of Traditional Medicine. This was a controlled clinical trial, comparing before-after treatment. 60 allergic rhinitis patients were divided into 2 comparable groups in age, gender, and disease severity. Both groups were treated with fundamental medications according to clinical guidelines, the study group was also treated with acupoint catgut-embedding therapy in combination. After treatment, the study group had an improvement in the physical symptoms (itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose, stuffy nose), the condition of the nasal mucosa, the quality of life (according to the RQLQ scale) and the number of relapses, significantly better than the control group (p < 0.05). In the study group, the percentage of patients suffered from painful catgut-embedded site was 5.0%, local bleeding 13.3%, slow absorption of catgut was 15.0%; no catgut-embedded site infection was reported. Therefore, the acupoint catgut-embedding therapy was safe and posed good effects for the supportive treatment of the Wind-heat pattern of allergic rhinitis.
