Abstract

We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study on 151 patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder at the Psychiatry Clinic of University Medical Center of Ho Chi Minh City from March 2023 to October 2023 with the goal of determining the rate and factors related to suicidal ideation in patients with major depressive disorder. After 7 months, we obtained the following results: the majority of patients are female (78.8%), have no religion (49.0%), lives in urban areas (62.9%), has a secondary school education or less (53.6%), married (57.0%), and living with a spouse/partner (58.9%). Nearly 80% of patients are currently in severe depression. There is an association between suicidal ideation in the patient's life and education level (OR = 2.5; 95%CI: 1.2 - 5.2), marital status (OR = 0.2; 95%CI: 0.1- 0.5), cohabitant (OR = 0.4; 95%CI: 0.2 - 0.8), history of co-morbidities (OR = 0.4; 95%CI: 0.2 - 0.8), guilt (OR = 5.1; 95%CI: 2.4 - 11.0), severity of depressive episode (OR = 11.0; 95%CI: 2.2 - 55.8). No association was found between gender, job, family history of mental disorders or suicide and other clinical symptoms with suicidal ideation.
