Abstract

Tinea corporis is a filamentous fungal infection of the skin on the trunk and extremities, excluding the fur, hair, nails, and folds. Three groups of filamentous fungi usually cause the disease: Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, and Microsporum. For moderate to severe cases, appropriate systemic antifungal medication is necessary. In an open clinical trial, a group of over 60 patients with moderate to severe fungal skin infections was studied to compare the efficacy of oral terbinafine and oral griseofulvin treatments. The results indicated that after 2 weeks of treatment, the terbinafine group exhibited significantly higher efficacy than the griseofulvin group, with cure rates of 70% and 10%, respectively, and stable rates of 0% and 30%, respectively. This difference was statistically significant with p < 0.001. After 4 weeks of treatment, the griseofulvin group showed a higher recurrence rate compared to the terbinafine group, at 46.7% and 0%, respectively, with p < 0.05. The rates of side effects for both groups were relatively low and similar (0.03% for the terbinafine group and 0.06% for the griseofulvin group) where the adverse effects of the two drugs were mainly related to the gastrointestinal tract.
