Abstract

Asthma and obstructive sleep apnea are two comorbid diseases, sharing the same pathophysiology and risk factors. Obstructive sleep apnea increases asthma severity and reduces asthma control in asthmatic children. Study of 181 asthmatic children who have not have or quit long-term control medication at the National Children’s Hospital from January 2021 to December 2022, receiving 6-month GINA 2020 guideline treatment. 46.4% asthmatic children had obstructive sleep apnea, apnea-hypopnea index is 4.0 ± 2.8 events/hour. 41.7% asthmatic children with obstructive sleep apnea achieved controlled asthma after treatment, significantly lower than asthmatic children without apnea. FEV1 of asthmatic children with obstructive sleep apnea is 89.6 ± 9.5%, lower than asthmatic children without apnea. There is a negative correlation between the severity of apnea and asthma control (r = -0.309). Obstructive sleep apnea is a risk factor for poorly controlled asthma (OR= 6.681; 95%CI: 1.731 - 25.787).
