Abstract

This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 90 first permanent molars in the mandible at the Hanoi Central Odonto-Stomatology Hospital. The aim was to investigate the thickness of the dentine and determine the danger zones in the root of the permanent mandibular first molar. The results indicated that the dentine thickness of the distal wall of mesial root is the thinnest, with a significant decrease in dentine thickness at 3mm below the root furcation. For the distal root, the minimal dentine thickness is located at the mesial wall 3mm below the furcation, being much thinner compared to the other three walls. Therefore, the "Danger Zone" in the first permanent molars comprises two locations: 3mm below the furcation on the distal wall of the mesial root and the mesial wall of the distal root, with average dentine thicknesses of 0.79 ± 0.18mm and 0.89 ± 0.20mm, respectively.
