Abstract

Neonatal anemia is defined as a hemoglobin or hematocrit concentration of > 2 standard deviations below the mean according to postnatal age. Infants under 32 weeks gestational age are categorized as extremely and very preterm. Preterm infants may face with many complications such as respiratory distress, infection, anemia, necrotising enterocolitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia Anemia of prematurity is a form of pathologic anemia. Anemia of prematurity can be related to many factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 130 preterm infants under 32 weeks gestational age at theNeonatal centre at National hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology from September 2023 to March 2024. The mean gestational age was 30.04 ± 1.79 weeks. The mean birth weight was 1317.3 ± 336.6 gram. The prevalence of anemia was 47.7%. Infants at 27 weeks gestation had the highest proportion of anemia accounted for 100%. There was an inverse relationship between the proportion of anemia and gestational age. Blood tests taken more than 3 times during the course of treatment and bronchopulmonary dysplasia were the risk factors for anemia in preterm infants.
