The relationship between the personality traits of medical doctor students, nursing students and their osce performance at Hanoi Medical University

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between the personality traits of medical doctor students, nursing students and their OSCE performance at Hanoi Medical University. Personality trait data were collected from 1162 students, including 2nd and 3rd-year medical doctor students and 4th-year nursing students, who participated in the OSCE practical exam. This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized the "Ten-Item Personality Inventory" questionnaire with a 7-point Likert scale. Results showed that, over 90% of students reported that they exhibit positive personality traits, which include: Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Openness. The mean score at all skill stations was higher among medical doctor students compared to nursing, except for problem identification and result interpretation. Students exhibiting traits such as Extraversion and Conscientiousness demonstrated better performance in the Physical Examination and Basic Procedure stations. These differences in skill test results assist students of different training programs to be able to choose appropriate learning methods to achieve high academic performance.
