Abstract

Thyrotoxicosis is a common thyroid disorder with multiple etiologies. With the aim of determining the cause of thyrotoxicosis and describing some clinical and subclinical characteristics of patients with thyrotoxicosis at Hanoi Medical University Hospital, we conducted a cross-sectional study on 370 patients treated at Hanoi Medical University Hospital from August 2023 to December 2023. Graves’ disease was the most common cause of thyrotoxicosis, accounting for 82.4%. Other less common causes were subacute thyroiditis (1.6%), solitary toxic adenoma (1.1%), multinodular toxic goiter (0.8%), gestational thyrotoxicosis (3%), and iodine-induced hyperthyroidism (1.1%), due to excess exogenous thyroid hormone (0.8%). Notably, 31 patients (8.3%) were of unknown causes. The average age of patients was 42.32 ± 14.19 years old. The majority of the patients were female, the female/male ratio was 3.2/1. The largest age group was adults aged from 31 to 40 years old, accounting for 28.9%.
