Validation and reliability assessment of the mini nutritional assessment- short form questionnaire among elderly at Hanoi Medical University Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the short-form MNA tool (MNA-SF) among the elderly patients at Hanoi Medical University Hospital. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 200 elderly individuals. Results showed that the proportion of elderly at risk of malnutrition and those with malnutrition according to the full MNA scale were 9.0% and 48.5%, respectively. Similar rates using the BMI-MNA-SF were 16.5% and 48%, and for the calf circumference (CC)-based MNA-SF were 21.0% and 49%, respectively. The study also demonstrated that the BMI-MNA-SF had slightly higher sensitivity (94.8%), specificity (76.5%), and AUC values (0.856) compared to the CC-MNA-SF version (93%, 61.2%, and 0.77, respectively). Regarding internal reliability, the results indicated complete agreement between two evaluators for all three versions of the MNA questionnaire, with kappa coefficients above 0.8 and agreement rates over 90%. Therefore, both forms of MNA-SF (BMI-based and CC-based) have good validity and reliability and can be recommended as a screening tool for nutritional assessment of the elderly.
