Factors associated with stigma among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder

Abstract
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to analyze factors related to stigma among 846 parents of children with autism spectrum disorder at the National Children's Hospital and five special education centers in Hanoi from February to November 2023. A structured questionnaire was administered to gather data. The results showed that sleep hours and marital status were associated with perceived stigma, self- stigma, and enacted stigma, while parental age and economic status were associated with only 1 or 2 types of stigma. Regarding child characteristics, age, duration and severity of the disorder were positive related to all 3 types of stigma, while health insurance, children’s school and gender were associated with only 1 or 2 types of stigma. These results suggest that health care professional should focus on high-risk groups to intervene to reduce stigma among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder.
