Abstract

The present study evaluated the hepatoprotective effects of Protecful hard capsules on Swiss mice with ethanol-induced hepatitis. Mice were given ethanol orally daily, increasing concentrations each week (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%). One hour after taking ethanol, mice were given distilled water/Protecful or silymarin for four weeks. All indexes, including body weight, liver weight, biochemical indicators (AST, ALT, GGT, albumin, and total bilirubin levels in the blood), liver malondialdehyde, glutathione concentration, and microscopic analysis, were evaluated. The results showed that Protecful at a dose of 345.6 mg/kg /day exhibited trends to have a hepatoprotective effect on ethanol-induced chronic hepatitis in mice. At 1036.8 mg/kg/day, Protecful significantly increased body weight, decreased liver weight, mitigated liver enzymes, increased blood albumin level, and further reduced oxidative stress compared to the model group. Additionally, Protecful improved the histopathological examination of mice with ethanol-induced chronic hepatitis. These findings suggested that Protecful hard capsule at 1036.8 mg/kg/day exerts a hepatoprotective effect against ethanol-induced liver injury.
