20. Clinical characteristics of patients with bilateral mandibular third molars indicated for extraction at the school of dentistry - Hanoi Medical University and the odonto-stomatology department - Hanoi Medical University Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
Mandibular third molars often lack sufficient space to erupt, leading to impaction or misalignment. As a result, wisdom tooth extraction has become a common procedure in oral surgery. This is an invasive procedure with potential complications before, during, and after surgery. Thorough clinical evaluation is essential for appropriate treatment planning and risk reduction. This cross-sectional study describes the clinical characteristics of mandibular third molars indicated for extraction based on Parant classifications II and III. It was conducted on 34 patients with 68 third molars at School of Dentistry – Hanoi Medical University and Odonto-Stomatology Department - Hanoi Medical University Hospital from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. The result shows that average patient age was 24.1 years old. Mesioangular impaction accounted for the highest proportion (89.7%). Common complications included bone loss (35.3%), distal caries of the second molar (17.6%), and external root resorption (4.4%). Female patients were more likely to experience complications than males. The findings indicate that mesioangular third molars are most prone to complications, emphasizing the importance of examination and prophylactic extraction, especially in younger patients.
