Abstract

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 172 healthcare workers at the clinical departments and health stations of the An Bien District Health Center, Kien Giang Province to describe the current standard precaution knowledge and practices among healthcare workers and associated factors. The average score percentage for knowledge of standard precautions was 89.2%, with the lowest in linen handling (77.3%), and the highest in medical waste management (97.0%), p < 0.001. The proportion of healthcare workers with good knowledge of standard precautions was 87.8%. The average score percentage for standard precaution practices was 75.4%, with the lowest in decontamination and cleaning of medical instruments (42.0%) and the highest in segregation of medical solid waste (93.0%), p < 0.0001. The proportion of healthcare workers with good standard precaution practices was 66.9%. Healthcare workers with good knowledge of standard precautions had a higher rate of good standard precaution practices compared to those with poor knowledge of standard precautions (OR = 7.22; p = 0.002). The findings suggest that the An Bien District Health Center, Kien Giang needs to strengthen training and monitoring to improve knowledge and practices of standard precautions among healthcare workers.
