Abstract

This study aimed to assess the prevalence of stress and identify associated factors among male patients undergoing routine health check-ups at the Andrology and Gender Medicine Clinic, Hanoi Medical University Hospital. A cross-sectional design was applied to 360 men aged 18 years old and older. Stress was measured using the DASS-21 scale, alongside collection of demographic data, health behaviors, sex hormone levels (testosterone, LH, estradiol), lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C), and bilateral testicular volume. The overall prevalence of stress was 24.4% (88/360), with mild stress accounting for 10.6%, moderate 8.9%, severe 3.3%, and very severe 1.7%. Multivariate logistic regression identified independent predictors of stress including age ≥ 30 years old (OR = 2.48; 95% CI: 1.19 – 5.20; p = 0.016), rural residence (OR = 1.99; p = 0.033), high HDL-C levels (OR = 4.09; p = 0.016), and smoking (OR = 0.33; p = 0.001). Among patients with sexual dysfunction (n = 98), the prevalence of stress was 20.4%, whereas it was highest in those with chronic pain (n = 108) at 38.9%. Several hormonal and metabolic indices, including LH, estradiol, triglycerides, and testicular volume, varied significantly with stress levels. These findings underscore stress as a prevalent and under-recognized issue in andrology practice, supporting the integration of psychological, biological, and behavioral assessment into comprehensive male health care.
