Abstract

Chyme reinfusion is an enteral nutrition technique that allows to re-establish the gastrointestinal continuity by reinfusing the chyme from the afferent to the efferent small bowel through an extracorporeal artificial tract. This leads to a better intestinal absorption of the chyme thus preventing water loss, electrolyte disturbances, malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies. This method of feeding also minimizes the high costs and multiple complications related to the conventional parenteral nutrition until the surgical re-establishment of intestinal continuity (SRIC). We reported the case of a 3-month old boy with the history of complicated midgut malrotation leading to a significant amount of small intestine ressected. Pending for the SRIC, chyme reinfusion was applied in conjunction with the parenteral nutrition. After 5 weeks of treatment, the nutritional status had improved and the patient underwent a successful SRIC. Conclusion: In patients with temporary double enterostomy pending for SRIC, chyme reinfusion is an efficient and effective method to initiate early enteral feeding and to reduce the need for parenteral nutrition.
