8. Brain magnetic resonance imaging findings in infantile epileptic spasms syndrome at Vietnam National Children's Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 70 patients from October 2023 to May 2025 to describe the brain MRI findings in infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) at Vietnam National Children's Hospital. Abnormal findings on brain MRI were observed in 51.4% of patients, including acquired structural abnormalities (22.9%), developmental structural abnormalities (15.7%), and non-specific lesions (12.9%). Common structural abnormalities included lissencephaly, periventricular leukomalacia, and lesions related to intracranial hemorrhage. 81.4% of patients had multilobar lesions, with common involvement of cortical gray matter (63%), white matter (52.9%), and corpus callosum (29.6%). New lesions were detected in two out of five patients who underwent a second brain MRI. There was a correlation between some clinical features and abnormal brain MRI findings. Brain MRI plays an important role in identifying the etiology of IESS.
