4. Single nucleotide polymorphism rs2856718 of HLA-DQ gene in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients infected with EBV
Main Article Content
Abstract
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the malignant disease related to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The HLA-DQ gene encodes receptor proteins on the surface of antigen presenting cells that play a critical role in recognizing and triggering immune response to EBV. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in HLA-DQ gene may influence NPC. This study investigated the association between the HLA-DQ rs2856718 and NPC risk in 109 patients and 129 healthy controls. The genotype frequencies of AA, AG, GG were 26.6%, 53.2%, 20.2% in the patient group and 19.4%, 48.1%, 32.6% in the control group, respectively. The G allele associated with a reduced risk of NPC (OR = 0.675; 95% CI = 0.469 - 0.969; p = 0.033). The GG genotype also decreased the risk in two genetic models: GG vs. AA (OR = 0.452; 95% CI = 0.215 - 0.949; p = 0.036) and GG vs. (AA + AG) (OR = 0.524; 95% CI = 0.289 - 0.950; p = 0.033). These findings suggest that the G allele and GG genotype of rs2856718 may exert a protective effect and contribute to the decrease of NPC risk in EBV-infected individuals.
