Efficacy and safety of pre-endoscopic oral carbohydrate supplementation in pediatric patients undergoing gastroduodenoscopy under anesthesia at Thai Binh Children’s Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of 12.5% maltodextrin intake two hours prior to performing anesthetized gastroduodenoscopy in children. A quasi-experimental controlled study was conducted on 380 pediatric patients at Thai Binh Children’s Hospital (June 2024 – July 2025), including 118 patients receiving oral maltodextrin (10 ml/kg, max 200 ml) and 262 patients following standard fasting. The intervention group had significantly reduced hunger, thirst, and anxiety (p < 0.05). Mean gastric residual volume was higher but within the safe range (< 1.5 ml/kg) and did not affect visualization quality or regurgitation risk. Oral 12.5% maltodextrin given two hours before endoscopy effectively alleviates pre-procedural discomfort while ensuring safety, supporting its feasibility in pediatric anesthesia practice.
