Anthropometric outcomes after masculinizing chest surgery in transgender men: Comparison with cisgender male standards
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate changes in chest anthropometric parameters after masculinizing chest surgery and to compare them with the standards of cisgender male individuals in Vietnam. A retrospective cohort study was conducted at two hospitals from 2022 to 2025 on 32 transgender men who underwent mastectomy and nipple-areola reconstruction, compared with a control group of 152 cisgender males. The results showed significant postoperative reductions in inter-nipple distance, sternal notch-nipple distance, and areolar diameter (p < 0.001), indicating that the postoperative chest shape closely approached male anthropometric characteristics. However, the postoperative transgender group still had a smaller ratio of inter-nipple distance to chest width and a larger nipple size compared with cisgender males (p < 0.05). Masculinizing chest surgery significantly improved chest anthropometry but requires further technical refinement to achieve optimal aesthetic and anatomical harmony with Vietnamese male standards.
