Prevalence of gingivitis and associated factors among adults in Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi, 2025
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study was conducted among 170 adults in Thanh Xuan district to describe the prevalence of gingivitis and to analyze associated factors. Gingival status was assessed using clinical indices, including the Debris Index (DI), Gingival Index (GI), Bleeding on Probing (BOP), and criteria for plaque-induced gingivitis. The results showed that gingivitis remained prevalent in the community (57.1%), accompanied by moderate levels of dental plaque and gingival inflammation (mean BOP: 23.1%). Multivariable analysis revealed that tooth brushing once daily (OR = 2.78; 95% CI: 1.17 - 6.59), not using dental floss (OR = 2.66; 95% CI: 1.37 - 5.16), and not attending regular dental check-ups (OR = 2.38; 95% CI: 1.24 - 4.54) were significantly associated with an increased risk of gingivitis. Smoking tended to increase the risk of gingivitis, although the association did not reach statistical significance. These findings highlight a strong association between oral hygiene behaviors and gingival health, emphasizing the critical role of adequate daily plaque control and regular dental visits in the prevention of gingivitis in urban communities.
