Abstract

School violence (SV) causes serious harm to adolescent development. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 400 secondary school students in Hai Duong province from May to June 2025. Results showed that the prevalence of students who had perpetrated SV was 30.8%. Statistically significant risk factors (p < 0.05) included: 8th graders (OR = 1.9); close friends with individuals involved in SV (OR = 9.9), internet use (OR = 7.9), carrying weapons to school, such as knives, sticks, or batons (OR = 7.1), smoking (OR = 3.9) and alcohol consumption (OR = 2.8). Regarding mental health, the risk of perpetrating SV increased among students who felt lonely (OR = 2.7), had difficulty concentrating (OR = 2.4), or experienced anxiety-induced loss of appetite (OR = 1.9). Regarding family factors, the risk was highest in unhappy families (OR = 4.7), sibling conflict (OR = 4.1), being an only child (OR = 3.5), or witnessing severe parental conflict (OR = 3.1). Conversely, students unaware of their family's economic status had a lower likelihood of perpetrating violence (OR = 0.4). This finding highlights variations in the risk of perpetrating SV based on students' awareness of family economic status, suggesting that economic perception may be linked to a lower likelihood of engaging in violent behaviors. These findings suggest that multi-dimensional interventions are necessary, focusing on monitoring peer groups and improving the family environment.
